Exports & Imports Cotton made-up, fabrics export in negative terrain Our Bureau
COIMBATORE, Jan. 1 THE cotton textiles export basket for the quota markets has shown a cumulative 14 per cent decline in value terms during January-November 2002 with two of the three key commodities in the basket - cotton made-ups and fabrics - recording negative growth. The overall value of exports for the 11-month period fell to $1,087 million as against $1,266 million realised for the same period in 2001. Cotton made-ups export, the largest chunk in the overall textile exports, had declined sharply by 20 per cent at $642 million compared to $813 million, whereas the value of fabrics exports slipped by 3.75 per cent at $291 million compared to $302 million, according to the quota countries' export figures compiled by the Cotton Textile Export Promotion Council (Texprocil). In terms of the volume of cotton fabrics shipped in the first 11 months of 2002 calendar, it fell by some seven per cent at 720 million metres compared to 773 million metres exported for the corresponding period of previous calendar. However, cotton yarn exports, which had shown a seven per cent decline both in value and volume in the 2001 calendar year, could stage a recovery during January-November 2002. Even as yarn exports to quota markets had shown an impressive 24 per cent volume growth during this period, its value growth in dollar term was, however, two per cent only. The total yarn shipped in the 11-month period of the just concluded calendar year worked out to 47 million kg valued $153 million compared to 38 million kg worth of $150 million exported between January and November 2001.
